Slugline for car interior4/24/2023 Are SF and DC the only cities in the country with slugging? Metrorail into the city from San Gabriel Valley can be the prime candidates to slug their way back to that Valley.īTW, I've heard that slugging is also popular in San Francisco. A good part of this lane is actually separated from the main freeway. There's a bus stop at the entrance, and the lane requires three occupants per vehicle. ![]() ![]() One location I'm hoping might be ideal for starting a slug pick-up spot is the entrance to the Eastbound 10 carpool lane off of Alameda Boulevard, just north of the freeway and just south of Los Angeles Union Station. But your right, some people play the odds that they won't get caught - or that it's worth paying the occasional fine. I usually see someone pulled over for not having the right number of occupants ($271 minimum fine) or the right car (single occupant CNG cars can use the HOV lane). SOV because you can, HOV because you care! I've been to LA, got family that live there, and definitely don't know how one would make it work there. snowstorms, hazmat spills, freezing rain). Of course, the linchpin to it all is some very amicable people willing to share and share alike, be friendly and cooperate when there's events beyond riders and drivers control (e.g. This isn't a point against slugging, it's just an indication of some people's tendency to attribute one means as the "silver bullet" approach. One would be hard-pressed to come up with un-biased numbers as to the number of people who slug daily. ![]() Rail, bus, informal carpool (slug), formal carpools, and any number of combinations. It is important to note (and some don't do so here being what the name of the site is) that the commute is composed of multiple redundant means for commuting. This serves as a hub to feed other parts of the city and serves as a meeting point for the return trip home. Slugging really only works along the I-95/395 corridor where isolated HOV lanes with limited entry/access points exist as previously stated.Īnother component that makes slugging work is the number 1 dropoff point is the Pentagon where busses and metrorail are available. One or two main arteries feeding the DC metro area require innovative and cooperative solutions that work to move massive amounts of people. The really interesting thing that makes slugging work here is what makes slugging necessary. case in point: New York City, where people complained "I would rather sit in traffic for 2 hours than ride with those people" I've read that they have tried slugging in other cities but failed. The location of the entrance/exit ramps, the people here and the layout of the city makes it possible. Why bother? Until you guys get HOV lanes that are separated with dividers from the rest of the highway, I don't think slugging would work in L.A.Īlso, the stops along the way make it possible here in DC. The way I see it, in LA you can either chose to sit in the bumper to bumper traffic by yourself, or sit in it with a couple of strangers. Last time I was in LA, they had an HOV lane, but it was not separate from the regular lanes and there was no enforcement. ![]() Roy, the thing that makes slugging work is the access to the HOV-3 lanes in the DC/Virginia area. Any suggestions that people (e.g., veteran sluggers and sluggees) have will be greatly appreciated. I seriously want to get slugging started here in the City of Angels. If there is a city that can sure use slugging, it's Los Angeles (notwithstanding all the earthquakes, more people continue to move in to L.A. Recently, an East Coast colleague turned me on to the art of slugging (he's been doing it for years in the Virginia-DC)area. Consequently, I have a great deal of interest in cars and carpooling. I publish an online car magazine in Los Angeles. Message Board - Getting slugging started in Los Angeles
